Phytotoxin sorption to clay minerals

چکیده

Abstract Background Phytotoxins of various classes and origin are often found in their cationic form the soil environment thus, overall behavior may be strongly affected by all geosorbents presenting cation exchange capacity (CEC). In addition to organic carbon (SOC), clays exhibit great potential as sorbents for chemicals. Therefore, 52 compounds major phytotoxin alkaloids, terpenoids steroids were investigated with regard sorption clay minerals kaolinite (low CEC) montmorillonite (high means continuous flow column experiments a high-throughput alternative traditional batch experiments. Results total, coefficients log D [L kg ?1 ] quantifiable 26 phytotoxins on (log > 0.1) 33 0.5). They ranged from 0.14 ± 0.09 pyrrolizidine alkaloid senkirkine 3.05 0.03 indole brucine montmorillonite. Although maximum sorbed concentrations lay well below CEC both minerals, non-linearity was observed some cases where little 0.1% sites occupied. Contrary expectations, could not wholly explained saturation available sites; protonated tertiary amines aromatic moieties, cooperative seemingly took place results indicated significant increase affinities within very limited concentration range. Comparing SOC, notable differences preferences sorbates between without moieties (e.g., isoquinoline versus alkaloids) N-heterocycles N-heteroaromatics particular strychnine gramine; alkaloids). Conclusions Overall, seems result interplay charge location sorbent structural features sorbates. To confirm tendencies towards certain phytotoxins, further studies higher needed. Nevertheless, obtained indicate that high proportion soils attributed minerals. Thus, possess ability decrease total environmental mobility.

Clay Minerals and Catalysis

More than half a century ago, Irish physicist John Desmond Bernal and Swiss geochemist Victor M. Goldschmidt independently proposed that clay minerals may have played an important role in prebiotic synthesis (Bernal 1949; Goldschmidt 1952). I concur that mineral catalysis must have had a central role in prebiotic synthesis because most uncatalyzed reactions start from simple precursors like hyd...

Clay Minerals: Adsorbophysical Properties

The structure and features of surfaces of clay minerals (kaolin, montmorillonite, etc) have an important scientific and practical value. On the surface the interrelation of processes at electronic, atomic and molecular levels is realized. Availability of mineral surface to external influences opens wide scientific and technical opportunities of use of the surface phenomena, so the research of c...

The sorption behavior of CS ion on clay minerals and zeolite in radioactive waste management: sorption kinetics and thermodynamics

In this work, Cs ion sorption on some clays and zeolite were investigated. Cs was used as a tracer. Activities were measured with a NaI crystal gamma counter. The particle size distribution was determined by a laser sizer. Surface area of the particles were determined by BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method). Structure analysis was made by using X-ray diffraction. The chemical compositions o...

Competitive sorption between glyphosate and inorganic phosphate on clay minerals and low organic matter soils

Inorganic phosphate may influence the adsorption of glyphosate to soil surface sites. It has been postulated that glyphosate sorption is dominated by the phosphoric acid moiety, therefore, inorganic phosphate could compete with glyphosate for surface sorption sites. We examine sorption of glyphosate in low organic carbon systems where clay minerals dominate the available adsorption sites using ...
